Toronto City Guide

Health services in Ontario

Toronto is part of Ontario's publicly funded health system. Sexual health care is delivered through municipal public health units, community health centres, hospitals, family physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists and non-profit organizations. Public Health Ontario provides surveillance reporting, and Toronto Public Health operates as the city's health unit.

The Ontario sexual education curriculum has been a recurring subject of public discussion, with revisions in 2015 and 2019 drawing considerable commentary.

Community and cultural life

Toronto has one of the largest and best-known LGBTQ2S+ communities in the country, with a historic village area around Church and Wellesley streets. Pride Toronto is a major annual celebration. The 1981 bathhouse raids are widely documented as a turning point in the city's activism and are often cited in histories of Canadian gay rights.

The city's size and diversity also produce a broad arts scene, with film festivals, theatre, universities and publishers that address sexuality and gender in many forms. Newcomer communities bring varied cultural perspectives that appear in public health outreach and academic study.
