Los Angeles initiative to regulate condoms in porn passes

Measure B was passed in Los Angeles on Nov 6th, promting threats from the industry group Free Speech Coalition to move production elsewhere. The measure requires all porn actors filming in Los Angeles County to wear condoms during all vaginal and anal sex scenes and for producers to pay for an additional public health permit.

“This measure was developed without input from adult industry professionals and does not reflect actual working conditions, realistic risk assessment, or the opinions of the people it is supposedly designed to protect” said Tristan Taormino in a (fantastic) story for the Huffington Post.

A law is already in place in California to mandate the use of condoms in porn, which the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, sponsor of the measure, claims is widely violated. As Taormino points out: “condom scenes take longer to shoot and are harder on [performers’] bodies. … the average person has intercourse for less than 10 minutes, while the average performer based on my experience as a director for 10 years does it for more than an hour. Using condoms in these extended sessions can cause genital tissue abrasions, which puts everyone at greater risk for STI transmission.”
